Comeback Medvedev Secures First Championship in Over Two Years
Nineteen of Daniil Medvedev's twenty-one titles have been earned on hard surfaces
A comeback Medvedev won his first trophy for nearly 30 months with success over Corentin Moutet in the tournament final.
Medvedev, a ex- world number one, has endured a torrid period, achieving just a single victory at the big events and experiencing a meltdown at the New York tournament.
His inconsistency on the ATP Tour - and issues with his service game in especial - resulted in him dropping out of the top ten and ultimately splitting with long-term mentor his previous coach.
Currently working with his coach and Rohan Goetzke, the tennis star has consistently advanced in the past month - peaking in a tightly fought three-set win over Frenchman Corentin Moutet.
This represents his maiden trophy following the Italian tournament and maiden on a hard surface after spring of that year.
The win also means the Russian has won twenty-one championships at twenty-one distinct events.
"This marks the first occasion I have attended a event with my children at once, so to secure a title is really nice," stated tennis professional Daniil Medvedev.
"This victory is in dedication of my younger daughter her name, because the maiden victory I got when my older daughter my daughter was born was for her."
Medvedev, the past champion, had lost his past six championship matches, featuring in Halle in the past months.
Medvedev's retrieving play style and regular emotional displays on the playing surface had led commentators to question if his capacity to play at the top level was concluded.
Yet the athlete has altered his approach in the past month, making an effort to approach the net and perform assertively, supported by an improved serving game.
The champion recovered from a disadvantage in the opening set against the difficult Frenchman, taking four of the concluding five games to gain the advantage.
Both players traded break points in the middle set before the challenger, attempting for his maiden ATP Tour title, seized the initiative to force a final set.
The opponent saved 4 early opportunities in a close third set before the champion won the break to that score to secure the win.
Appropriately, Medvedev earned the win with a shot at the net area, with his opponent failing to control a shot after a lengthy match.
